If you’ve visited The Grand Olde Station, you’ve probably noticed our restored 630 caboose. The Grande Olde Caboose isn’t just a photo opportunity, it’s a tribute to Lake Toxaway’s railroad past, a beloved landmark, and a unique part of your historic dining experience.
Honoring the Railroad Roots
The site where The Grand Olde Station now operates once served as a functioning train depot for Lake Toxaway. Trains carried goods and passengers through the area, fueling the early growth and connection of the community. Over time, the depot fell out of use, but the caboose you see today evokes the spirit of that original era. Similar to the cars that once rolled through this very site, our caboose reminds us of what travel, commerce, and gathering looked like decades ago. According to our Caboose page, “honoring the original purpose of our property … we were able to restore a historic train caboose. The caboose is similar to what one would have seen years ago on the same site.”
From Derelict to Delight
Bringing this caboose back to life took vision, planning, and a lot of effort. What was once a worn, derelict train car has been carefully restored into a space that sparks curiosity and nostalgia. When you step inside or walk alongside it, you can imagine the energy of trains pulling in and out, the travelers arriving, and the importance of this very spot to Lake Toxaway’s history.
More than Just a Landmark
The caboose is more than décor, it’s part of what makes The Grand Olde Station special. Its presence creates a nostalgic atmosphere that pairs perfectly with our locally inspired menu. Guests often use it as a backdrop for photos, making their visit even more memorable. For locals, it’s a point of pride that ties into the broader story of Lake Toxaway. For visitors, it’s a one-of-a-kind landmark that makes dining here unforgettable.
